Woody Fragrances Explained: Which of the Four Families You Actually Want
Woody is not one smell. On Michael Edwards' Fragrance Wheel the Woody quarter is three families: Woods, cedar and sandalwood led; Dry Woods, which adds leather and smoke; and Mossy Woods, oakmoss and often pineapple. Woody Amber, which warms wood with resins, sits next door in the Amber quarter. 17 bottles on the Accord Twin list fall in those four, from Lidl G. Bellini Wood at $8 to Creed Aventus at $380.
Ask for a woody fragrance in a shop and you could be handed a dry leather scent, a creamy sandalwood, a green pineapple-and-moss bottle or a warm resinous one. All four are woody, which is why the word is close to useless on its own and why disliking one woody scent says little about the rest.
Woody is a quarter of a wheel, not a smell.
This guide sorts the woody side of the Fragrance Wheel into four wood-led families, places every bottle on the Accord Twin list that carries a wear figure into the right one with its notes, price and hours, names the eight newer Woods bottles that carry none, and answers two common searches: aromatic woody fragrances for men, and woody floral scents.
What does woody actually mean on the Fragrance Wheel?
The Fragrance Wheel grew out of the classification Michael Edwards first published in 1983, and he and his team have since classified more than 60,000 fragrances. It has four main families, Floral, Amber, Woody and Fresh, and each is split into sub-families that sit next to their neighbours. The Woody quarter has three: Woods, Mossy Woods and Dry Woods. Woody Amber sits right beside them in the Amber quarter, and this guide includes it because the wood leads. If you came here looking for oud, read what oud actually is first, because not one of the 122 bottles on the list names it.
The materials are what you would expect. Cedar is dry and pencil-like. Sandalwood is creamy and soft. Vetiver is a grass root that smells earthy and slightly smoky. Oakmoss is damp and green. Birch reads as tar and smoke. Guaiac wood is smoky and sweet. Which of these leads, and what sits around it, decides the family.
A bottle that shares a family with one you already love shares a note pattern with it. A bottle that merely shares the word woody may share nothing at all.
Which woody notes are rising and which are fading?
The wood notes are not moving together, which is the useful thing a family label hides.
Across 57,598 dated fragrances in the Accord Twin corpus, counted as a share of all note mentions in each decade:
| Decade | Sandalwood | Vetiver | Oakmoss |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1980s | 3.96% | 2.29% | 2.03% |
| 1990s | 4.44% | 1.58% | 1.52% |
| 2000s | 3.79% | 1.75% | 0.80% |
| 2010s | 3.34% | 1.71% | 0.74% |
| 2020s | 2.89% | 1.42% | 0.59% |
Sandalwood is broadly flat on 16,603 releases, vetiver down about 1.6 times on 8,080, and oakmoss down 3.5 times on 4,038. Oakmoss is the steepest fall of any note measured here, which tracks the IFRA restrictions placed on it. So a Mossy Woods bottle from the 1980s and one from today are not built from the same materials.
These are notes as brands list them rather than measured content, and the 2020s rest on 4,290 dated releases, so treat the last column as the weakest one.
What is the difference between Woods, Dry Woods, Mossy Woods and Woody Amber?
The four wood-led families differ in what surrounds the wood, and the table below puts every bottle in them that carries a wear figure next to its notes.
Woods is the plain centre: cedar, sandalwood, often iris. Clean, dry, faintly powdery. Dry Woods pushes further into leather and smoke. Mossy Woods is oakmoss and green notes, sometimes with fruit on top. Woody Amber takes the wood and warms it with resins, vanilla or coffee until it sits halfway to the Amber family.
| Family | Bottle | Price | Wear | Listed notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woods | Le Labo Santal 33 | $250 | ~7h | sandalwood, cardamom, iris, leather |
| Woods | Dior Homme Intense | $173 | ~8h | iris, amber, vanilla, cedar |
| Woods | Prada L'Homme | $145 | ~5h | iris, neroli, amber, cedar |
| Dry Woods | Zara Vibrant Leather | $39.90 | ~5h | bergamot, leather, ambrette, cedar |
| Mossy Woods | Creed Aventus | $380 | ~8h | pineapple, birch, black currant, oakmoss |
| Mossy Woods | Nishane Hacivat | $240 | ~9h | pineapple, cedarwood, oakmoss, bergamot |
| Mossy Woods | Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man | $26.99 | ~7h | pineapple, birch, lemon, musk |
| Woody Amber | Maison Margiela By the Fireplace | $170 | ~5h | chestnut, guaiac wood, vanilla, clove |
| Woody Amber | Lattafa Asad | $29.50 | ~8h | black pepper, coffee, benzoin, amber |
Read down the notes column and the families stop being abstract. The three Woods bottles in the table all list iris, all three Mossy Woods bottles list pineapple, and both Woody Amber bottles pair the wood with something edible. The list also holds eight more Woods bottles with no wear figure, four matched pairs running from Lidl G. Bellini Wood at $8 to Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede at $264, and not one of them names a wood among its five notes. For those eight, the family label is doing work the note list does not show.
Which are the aromatic woody fragrances for men?
The aromatic woody bottles on the Accord Twin list are Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L'Homme and Valentino Born in Roma Uomo, the two Aromatic-family bottles with a wear figure that name a wood note. Aromatic is a family on the Fresh side of the wheel, built on herbs like lavender, mint and sage, and an aromatic woody fragrance opens on those herbs and dries down onto wood.
La Nuit de L'Homme is an eau de toilette at $130, wearing around 4 hours, with listed notes of cardamom, lavender, vetiver and cedar. That is the textbook shape: spice and lavender over vetiver and cedar. Born in Roma Uomo is an eau de toilette at $110, wearing around 5 hours, listing vanilla, ginger, vetiver and mineral salt, which puts a sweeter opening over the same root.
Real sandalwood sits behind some of these names, and it is getting harder to buy. A 2022 paper in PLoS One attributes a large-scale shortage and rising prices to over-harvesting and habitat loss.
Should you choose an aromatic woody or a wood-led bottle?
Choose by the hours you need: the two aromatic woody bottles on the Accord Twin list wear around 4 and 5 hours, while wood-led bottles such as Dior Homme Intense, Nishane Hacivat and Lattafa Asad wear around 8, 9 and 8. If you want the wood to lead rather than follow, step across into the Woody families above.
Dior Sauvage is the near miss. It is an eau de toilette at $135, wearing around 6 hours, listing bergamot, sichuan pepper, ambroxan and lavender, so it sits on the aromatic side with a woody-amber synthetic underneath rather than a named wood.
Two more Aromatic bottles name pine needles over juniper and lemon: Byredo Gypsy Water at $330 and Finery Mysterious Nomad at $15, the Target bottle Accord Twin pairs with it. The list holds no wear figure for either. Neither style is the better choice, but they suit different days.
What are woody floral scents, and which bottles are they?
Woody floral is the overlap zone between the Woody and Floral quarters: a wood at the base with a flower on top, or a flower with a wood holding it up. On the Accord Twin list, the flower that does this most often in the Woods family is iris, which is technically a root but reads as a cool, powdery floral, and it appears in all three Woods bottles that carry a wear figure.
So the iris-led woody florals on the list are Santal 33, Dior Homme Intense and Prada L'Homme, with iris over sandalwood or cedar in each case. Zara Deep Temptation at $26 and Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede at $264 reach the same overlap with chinese osmanthus instead, though Accord Twin holds no wear figure for either. On the Floral side, Lattafa Yara is an eau de parfum at $44.99, wearing around 5 hours, listing orchid, heliotrope, vanilla and sandalwood: a floral that borrows sandalwood as its base. It is in the Floral Amber family, which shows how close the two quarters sit.
Which woody fragrance lasts the longest?
Among the woody bottles with a wear figure, Nishane Hacivat lasts longest at around 9 hours, and it is the only extrait on the whole list, the most concentrated of the standard strengths. Behind it at around 8 hours are three eaux de parfum: Creed Aventus, Dior Homme Intense and Lattafa Asad.
That last name is the one to notice. Asad is $29.50 and wears the same 8 hours as bottles at $173 and $380, so price is a poor guide to hours here. The eaux de toilette in the group are Prada L'Homme and Maison Margiela By the Fireplace at around 5 hours and Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man at around 7, the longest-wearing eau de toilette on the list, where eaux de toilette run from around 4 to 7.
How any of them unfolds is the same. Top notes are the lightest molecules and fade first. Heart notes come through as they go, and base notes are the heaviest and outlast both. In a woody fragrance the wood or the resin usually sits in that base, so the woody part is the part still there hours in, and that is when to judge it.
Can a family label tell you whether you will like a woody bottle?
A family label cannot tell you whether you will like a woody bottle. It predicts a note pattern, and a note pattern is a starting point rather than a verdict: the list holds four or five notes per bottle, with no proportions and no grades, so two bottles in the same family can share a pattern and still differ in ways the list cannot show.
The data also thins out. Only 9 of the 17 bottles in these four families carry a wear figure, so the longevity answers above cover about half the field, and the eight newer Woods bottles are judged on notes alone. The material descriptions, cedar as pencil-like or birch as tar, are how perfumery commonly describes those materials, not a report from a wrist, because Accord Twin has never smelled any of these bottles. And prices from $8 to $380 move; if a retailer shows a different figure, trust the retailer.
Wear figures are a separate axis again, and they follow how fast materials leave skin, which Givaudan researchers measured in 2001.
Where should you start if you are new to woody fragrances?
Start cheaply and in the right family: each of the four wood-led families has a bottle under $40 on the Accord Twin list, so you can try every corner before spending real money on one.
- Woods: Lidl G. Bellini Wood, $8. Orange, grapefruit and pepper over pelargonium and flint, with no wood named at all. Accord Twin holds no wear figure for it, so treat it as a cheap test of the family rather than of staying power.
- Dry Woods: Zara Vibrant Leather, $39.90, around 5 hours. Bergamot over leather and cedar. Try this if you think you want something dry and slightly smoky.
- Woody Amber: Lattafa Asad, $29.50, around 8 hours. Coffee and pepper over benzoin and amber. Try this if you want warmth and depth for an evening.
- Mossy Woods: Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man, $26.99, around 7 hours. Pineapple and birch over musk. Try this if the green, bright, smoky style appeals.
What should you do once one of the four lands?
Once one of the four lands, the upgrade goes to a dearer bottle in the same family, because that is where the note pattern you liked continues. Wear whichever you choose past the top notes before deciding. In Mossy Woods, the step up from Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man at $26.99 is Creed Aventus at $380, the bottle Accord Twin pairs it with, or Nishane Hacivat at $240. In Woody Amber it is Maison Margiela By the Fireplace at $170, though as an eau de toilette it wears around 5 hours to Asad's 8. The cheapest Woods bottle with a wear figure is Prada L'Homme at $145.
If none of them lands, you have learned cheaply that woody is not your quarter of the wheel, which is worth knowing.
Accord Twin will do the sorting for you: describe how you want to smell and it will name the bottle in the right family at each of three prices, and tell you if you already own its family.
What to remember
- The Woody quarter of the Fragrance Wheel is three families, Woods, Mossy Woods and Dry Woods, and Woody Amber sits beside them in the Amber quarter.
- The family predicts the notes better than the word does: all three Mossy Woods bottles on the list name pineapple, and both Woody Amber bottles pair wood with something edible.
- Aromatic woody men's fragrances open on herbs and dry down to wood; La Nuit de L'Homme ($130) is the textbook shape.
- The iris-led woody florals on the Accord Twin list are Santal 33, Dior Homme Intense and Prada L'Homme; Zara Deep Temptation ($26) reaches the same overlap with osmanthus.
- Lattafa Asad ($29.50) wears around 8 hours, the same as Aventus at $380, so price is a poor guide to wear time among the woody bottles.
- Every wood-led family has a bottle under $40: G. Bellini Wood ($8), Vibrant Leather ($39.90), Asad ($29.50) and Club de Nuit Intense Man ($26.99).
Common questions
What is a woody fragrance?
One whose base is built on wood materials such as cedar, sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss or birch. On the Fragrance Wheel the Woody quarter is split into Woods, Mossy Woods and Dry Woods, with Woody Amber beside it in the Amber quarter.
What is an aromatic woody fragrance?
A scent that opens on herbs such as lavender, mint or sage and dries down onto a wood like vetiver or cedar. It is the classic men's structure. On the Accord Twin list, YSL La Nuit de L'Homme is the clearest example, with cardamom and lavender over vetiver and cedar.
What is a woody floral scent?
A fragrance with a flower over a wood base, or a wood holding up a flower. On the Accord Twin list, iris over cedar or sandalwood is the commonest version, and it appears in Santal 33, Dior Homme Intense and Prada L'Homme.
Which woody fragrance lasts longest?
Among the woody bottles Accord Twin publishes a wear figure for, Nishane Hacivat at around 9 hours; it is an extrait. Creed Aventus, Dior Homme Intense and Lattafa Asad follow at around 8 hours each.
What is the cheapest good woody fragrance?
Lidl G. Bellini Wood at $8 is the cheapest woody bottle on the Accord Twin list, in the Woods family, though a note list cannot tell you whether it is good and Accord Twin holds no wear figure for it. The cheapest in the other three families are Zara Vibrant Leather at $39.90 for Dry Woods, Lattafa Asad at $29.50 for Woody Amber and Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man at $26.99 for Mossy Woods.
Are woody fragrances for men or women?
Both. The iris-led Woods bottles in particular are not marketed to one gender. Marketing skews the Mossy Woods and Dry Woods bottles toward men, but the note lists do not.
Prices here are the figures Accord Twin lists, last checked September 2026. They are a reference for comparing bottles, not one shop's till: the same bottle moves with size and retailer, so check the shop before buying.
Describe the kind of wood you want, dry, creamy, green or warm, and Accord Twin will name the bottle in that family at three prices.
